Obstetrics and Gynecology (OB/GYN)

Obstetrics & Gynecology is that branch of medicine which is concerned with the female reproductive organs and child birth. Since both the factors are interlinked, most of the gynecological doctors specialize in obstetrics too. Gynecology deals with the ailments regarding female reproductive organs only but obstetrics covers both the fields.

When a woman becomes pregnant she needs to consult an obstetrician. A gynecologist is not sufficient for her. The obstetrician takes care of all her problems which arise during pregnancy and childbirth; He/she is a specialized physician in the field of caring for the women during her prenatal and post partum stage. Any complication which may arise during pregnancy, like abnormal bleeding, formation of cysts, ecoptic pregnancy fibroid formation in the uterus, pre mature delivery etc are diagnosed and treated by an obstetrician.

Ultra sonography plays an important role in it. Nowadays, every woman gets an ultra sound done during pregnancy to ascertain the condition of the fetus and the mother. The nutritional and medication requirements of the expectant mother are taken care of by the obstetrician and she takes care of the mother’s health even after the delivery of the child. Hence an obstetrician plays an important role for the pregnant women when the child is due.
