All my life I have struggles with a near-obesity weight. I never used to work out or if I did it was severely disproportionate compared to the calories I used to eat every day. Furthermore, I never looked at what I was eating. There were moments when I just walked into a no-name restaurant after a failed business attempt and I just ordered “the daily special menu”, without even caring what that was. It took me years of dieting, which always had no positive long term effects. I eventually turned to a nutritionist, pushed by friends and family…And from here I was diagnosed with a binge eating disorder, which I studied and documented a lot after that, until I finally managed to keep it under control. The fact that I knew I was sick in some way motivated me to do something about it, so for others that are binge eating without knowing it, it might help to know the usual alarm signals that show you suffer from this.
To cure binge eating you need help, it is not something that is only related to character strength and personal will. If you are, like me, eating as a response to your feelings, especially when you are not really hungry, they you are a person who is binge eating and will do so until obesity or even worse. This means that your emotions are dictated when and how much you should eat, and when they take control there’s nothing the body can do about it.
Amongst the most typical signs that you are binge eating is the lack of hunger when you eat. I don’t remember even feeling hungry, mainly because I ate so often and so much that the hunger sensation couldn’t even appear. I’ve also found out that people who are binge eating go over the line especially in certain moments of their days or lives. Some persons with a binge eating disorder get food cravings especially when they are sad or confused. For others, eating can be a way to avoid thinking of problems they currently have or to avoid acting on them so they can solve them one way of the other. In the end, binge eating has severe philological causes and I have to admit I didn’t make it through without the help of a friend of mine who happens to be a personal psychiatrist. You shouldn’t run away from professional help when you have a binge eating disorder, it might be the only thing able to rescue you from yourself.
When I was eating, the common sign of binge eating that should’ve alarmed me something is wrong is the fact that I was never hungry and I always choosing the aliments rich in fats and calories. Because I liked them and they made me feel better. The fatter, the sweeter or the saltier the food was, the better I felt.
Ask yourself this: Are there any signs that you are binge eating? If your answer is yes to one or more of the below questions, then you are…If the condition is severe and you have been binge eating for quite some time now you will probably answer yes to more than one; even to all of them.
- Do you eat without realizing what you are doing? - Do you often feel ashamed or guilty after you eat? - Do you eat alone and in strange locations, as if you were hiding from the world? - If you have a fight with someone, do you turn to food even if you are not hungry? - Do you need special foods when you are severely upset, as chocolate or fat meat? - Do you feel like eating as a response to external stimulus, as advertising on the TV or a kid eating an ice-cream in the park? - Do you eat because you feel there’s nothing else you could do at that time? - Does eating make you feel better when you are less concentrated on your problems or when you are worried?
I used to swallow food sometimes as if it was water, not even considering how many bowls I’ve had already. Dreaming with my eyes open while I was eating was also a sign of binge eating. I was a hard battle to fight, because the root of my problem laid in the fact that I had a serious personality disorder, related to fear of commitment and a total lack of confidence in my own efforts of solving something. Basically, whenever something needed to be done by me, I chose to first escape and eat till I dropped sick, then come back and made a decision. Anyway, with the help of specialized persons and by making a strict eating schedule I managed to control what and when I was eating.
